It is believed that the chessmen originated from Norway or Iceland and remained undiscovered for centuries. It wasn’t until 1831 that they were found by serendipity near the sea on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Some of the original pieces remain in the United Kingdom and are on display at The British Museum in London. Another group of the originals is housed at National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh.
