Luxury Staunton Chess Sets
The original Staunton design was originated in 1849 by Nathaniel Cook of England. He successfully developed a standard of chess set that became universally recognized across the world. Previous to his innovation the disparate regions of the world had many designs – many of which differentiation between individual pieces was rather difficult. The Staunton design established clear distinctions between the various pieces. Today there are many interpretations and variations on the original design.
Today luxury chess sets and premium chess sets are differentiated from more common sets on two variables: design of the pieces, in particular the Knight; and the type of wood(s) used for the pieces and board. A true luxury chess set will have a set of Knights that is expertly, intricately carved by an experienced and skilled carver – with all four Knights being uniform in appearance. In addition to skill in carving and turning, one must select an excellent base block of wood. Once completely carved, the artist will finish and polish to perfection.
