The Staunton design is the most popular of designs for chess pieces, and is universally recognized as the standard by F.I.D.E. (The World Chess Federation). The idea to standardize chess pieces with a simple classic design was initiated by Nathaniel Cook of England in 1849. The leading player of the day, Englishman Howard Staunton, lent his name to popularize the design.
Today there are many variations of the original chess pieces of 1849. In addition to Boxwood and Ebony, many other woods have been used for modern chess pieces. In particular, ‘Ebonized Boxwood’ has been used as an affordable alternative to the luxurious Ebony. Artists and craftsmen have used their artistic licence to create a myriad of beautiful designs.
