The Isle Of Lewis Italian Large Briar Chess Set

This supremely luxurious chess set combines the legendary Isle of Lewis chess pieces with our beautiful Italian Briarwood chess board. This large chess set is of extremely high quality and beauty. The chess pieces are beautiful reproductions of the original Isle of Lewis chess pieces. They have been produced from laser scans of the original pieces that are stored and cared for by the British Museum. The Lewis chess pieces have become recognized as one of the world's most historically important designs of chess pieces.

It is believed that the chessmen originated from Norway or Iceland and remained undiscovered for centuries. It wasn’t until 1831 that they were found by serendipity near the sea on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Some of the original pieces remain in the United Kingdom and are on display at The British Museum in London. Another group of the originals is housed at National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh. These precise reproductions give you a chance to own a very significant piece of history.
