The standard appearance of modern chess sets was patented in 1849 by Nathaniel Cook of England, who used the endorsement of the leading player of the day, Howard Staunton. The knights in the set were modelled after the horses in the famous Elgin Marbles - that were transported from Greece’s Parthenon to The British Museum between 1801 and 1812. Today most sets are fashioned after Staunton’s classic design. Here we present some fine interpretations in woods such as Walnut, Ebony and Sheesham (Golden Rosewood).
