Judit Polgar of Budapest, Hungary has been inspirational to girl chess players across the world. She earned the title of Grandmaster at the age of 15 years and 4 months to best the previous record held by Bobby Fischer. Judit has chosen to participate only in open events, not in women only tournaments. She has been the highest rated woman in the world since she was 12 years old in 1989 and continued to hold that placing for 25 years! Judit became the only woman to ever beaten a reigning World Champion when she bested Garry Kasparov.
When she started studying chess, her older sister, also a Grandmaster, described her as “a slow starter, but very hard-working.” Her father Lazslo believed that children could achieve great results if they were trained in the correct way. Judit and her two sisters, Zsuzsa and Zsofia, were taught by various trainers including Tibor Florian, Pal Benko and Alexander Chernin.
She announced her retirement in 2014 following Hungary winning a team silver medal at the Chess Olympiad. Recently Judit authored a children’s instructional book Chess Playground, with illustrations by her sister Zsofia. She has been very active in promoting chess as an educational tool in the Hungarian school system.
